The Flex Program

Every student is unique. That’s why we’ve created Flex—a learning experience that adapts to your family’s schedule and your child’s learning style. Whether you need more structure or greater independence, Flex provides the right balance of autonomy and support to help students thrive.

What is the Flex program?

Our Flex program is designed for students in grades 10-12 who need a modified daily schedule and cannot consistently attend live classes between 8:45 AM and 3:15 PM (Eastern Time), Monday–Friday. Flex is not a “work at your own pace” program—Flex students still follow the same pacing as live classes. However, they are allowed more scheduling freedom while receiving support from certified teachers. Flex students must be responsible, self-motivated, and able to manage their time independently.

Core Benefits for Students and Families

Calendar

Learn on Your Schedule That Fits Your Life

Flex can be a helpful option for families balancing medical needs, extracurricular activities, jobs, or other daytime commitments. Students may watch class recordings when they cannot attend live, as long as they remain on track and log in every school day.

Individualized Support to Stay on Track

Although Flex students have more independence, they continue to receive guidance from certified teachers. Students are encouraged to attend live classes whenever possible to receive direct instruction, ask questions, and get clarification.

Flexibility Without Sacrificing Quality

Flex students complete the same curriculum as all other students and follow the same course pacing. They get more flexibility in their day while still keeping up with required coursework.

Designed for Responsible, Independent Learnings

Flex can be a great solution for busy families, but students must prioritize school, manage time effectively, and maintain passing grades. Because they may miss live classes, Flex students must take greater ownership of their learning, and watch those missed class recordings.

How Our Flex Program Works

Flex students and their Learning Coaches create a daily learning routine that fits their needs. Students:

  • Log in every school day
  • Watch all missed live class recordings
  • Follow the same pacing as live classes
  • Maintain passing grades (60% or higher)
  • Attend live classes whenever they can

Flex students may join classes late or leave early as needed. Some classes may occur at the same time—students may choose the live session that is most needed on that day and watch the recording for the other.

Important Exceptions

The following classes must be attended live:

  • SE Basic Skills
  • ENG040A Grammar and Composition
  • Any AP Course

Attendance Requirements

Flex students must meet all school attendance and engagement expectations.

  • Students must log in every school day and complete schoolwork.
  • A day with no login is counted as an absence.
  • Flex students must attend all required state testing as scheduled-these times are not flexible and need to be planned for accordingly (NWEA, PSAT/SAT, ILEARN).

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Flex program differ from the standard program?

Both Flex and the standard program use the same curriculum and pacing. The main difference is in class attendance:

  • Standard program: Students attend daily live, teacher-directed instruction.
  • Flex program: Students attend live classes when possible but may watch recordings if they cannot attend. Flex is best for students who cannot consistently attend live sessions and who are disciplined enough to stay on track independently.

Is the curriculum the same for the Flex students?

Yes. Flex students complete the same curriculum and follow the same pacing expectations as their peers. They access courses through the OLS and use sample schedules to help structure their learning.

How often do Flex students receive support?

Teachers are available by email and phone during school days when they are not in session and hold regular posted office hours in virtual classrooms.
