More About Work-Based Learning: Rewarding Work Beyond the Classrom

Did you work a summer job? Do you want to earn school credit for it?

Work-based learning (WBL) presents a valuable avenue for students to supplement their learning with real work experiences, teaching them valuable skills and practices that are best learned beyond the classroom. HCCA is now offering students two unique opportunities to gain credit for these experiences and participate in new ones.

Earlier this year, we released a blog announcing our partnership with 220 Youth Leadership (220YL), an educational program aiming to help students fulfill their graduation requirements through specialized learning opportunities grounded in career and life development. Through offerings such as flexible mini courses, work-based learning, and one semester courses—all in compliance with Indiana’s Academic Standards—220 Youth Leadership enables students to take control of their education all while gaining essential leadership development and workforce readiness skills in the process. This fall, students will have the option to enroll in a WBL simulation where they participate in up to 150 hours of work across 10 leading industries right from their home.

  1. Onboarding and Orientation
  1. Marketing, Branding, and Graphic Design
  1. Education and Curriculum Design
  1. Sales and Business Development
  1. App and Product Development & UX
  1. Finance and Accounting
  1. Technology, Systems, and AI
  1. Customer Experience and Operations
  1. Entrepreneurship and Product Design
  1. Social Media Strategy and Campaigns

Students will complete a 15-hour rotation within each industry, allowing them to gain an extensive overview of the various career pathways available to them, while learning and mastering industry-specific skills. Through this program, we are enhancing our ability to provide students with a comprehensive education, supplementing not only their learning, but also their confidence and efficacy within the workforce.

But why wait until fall to start gaining valuable learning credit for work you are already doing?

In addition to the hours students may earn through participation in 220YL, all students with a summer job, internship, or approved training experience may report and contribute their current work hours toward their total WBL Program hours. This allows students in grades 10-12 to earn up to 150 hours of work-based learning credit through their participation in 220YL as well as the opportunity to earn additional hours through approved work opportunities such as jobs or internships. Those who complete the 220YL program will earn an Employment Honors Plus seal on their diploma. Students interested should complete the Google Form by August 21, 2026. For more information about what experiences qualify under WBL, and how you can receive credit, contact Ms. Emily Young, [email protected].

Don’t wait! Gain experience, confidence, and recognition today, all through flexible and empowered learning. Work today, earn tomorrow!
