Racing Into Summer: HCCA Student Athlete’s Track to Success
Balancing academics and athletics can be a challenge, but an environment dedicated to empowering students to pursue their passions through individualized support and flexibility makes all the difference.
Brooklyn, a professional racer, is entering her junior year at Hoosier College and Career Academy (HCCA) this fall. She spends her weekends racing at the Indianapolis Speedrome and is the youngest racer in her division.
“It’s no surprise — racing is in our blood,” Danielle, Brooklyn’s mom, said.
Brooklyn’s family has been involved in the sport for decades since her grandfather won Rookie of the Year in 1973. She has shown the same dedication and passion since she first started racing with go-karts.
Brooklyn leverages the flexibility of online school to prioritize academics on her own schedule. She finishes schoolwork at 2:30 p.m. and heads straight to the garage to work on her car for that weekend’s race.
Before enrolling at HCCA, Brooklyn attended asynchronous online school, but the lack of structure wasn’t the right fit for her learning style. Now, Brooklyn is supported every step of the way with personalized, virtual learning opportunities.
“Joining live classes helps to keep me accountable,” Brooklyn said. “The teachers make lessons engaging, and I’m able to focus more during school hours.”
The official season runs from April to October, but she spends time racing year-round. Last year, she competed in 30 races in two different divisions.
“I’m hoping to encourage more girls to get involved with racing,” Brooklyn said. “My goal is to be a role model for them in a male-dominated sport.”
Brooklyn hopes to continue honing her skills to eventually race in Legend Cars and travel around the world.
